Open Banking Specifics in Bulgaria

# Authentication flows and SCA

Bulgarian banks primarily use redirect-based authorisation flows for Open Banking. A few ASPSPs support app-to-app redirection for SCA when Open Banking authorisation is performed on a mobile device with the bank’s app installed. Authentication typically requires entering user credentials and confirming the action through the mobile app or other SCA methods (e.g. SMS OTP or push notification).

# Payment Specifics

All Bulgarian banks support domestic payments in BGN (Bulgarian Lev), the local currency, and SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT) in EUR (Euro) via their open banking APIs. Instant SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT Inst) are generally not supported.

# Specifics per ASPSP

Below are some notable specifics for major banks operating in Bulgaria.

# UniCredit Bulbank

For SCA UniCredit Bulbank (УниКредит Булбанк) uses M-token (М-токен) functionality embedded in the Bulbank Mobile app, the bank's mobile application. After redirect to the bank's authentication interface end-users have to choose between authentication using the Bulbank Mobile app or the Bulbank Online, the bank's online banking interface. The first option requires the application to be installed on the device where the authentication interface is displayed and trigger app switch to the application. The second option lets end-users to input their credentials and performs SCA using M-token. Automatic app-to-app redirection is not supported.

# DSK Bank

DSK Bank (Банка ДСК) requires end-users to input their DSK Direct (ДСК Директ) username and password in the authentication web interface used for open banking. App-to-app redirection is not supported.

# Postbank

Postbank (Пощенска банка) uses the m-Token Postbank mobile app for SCA. After redirect to the authentication web interface used for open banking, end-users have to input their username and password used for the bank's online banking. App switch is not supported when using mobile devices.

# United Bulgarian Bank

United Bulgarian Bank — UBB (Обединена българска банка — ОББ) uses the ОББ Мобайл app for SCA. Automatic app-to-app redirection is performed on a mobile device with the bank’s app installed.
