Open Banking Specifics in the Netherlands

# Authentication flows and SCA

Dutch banks rely primarily on redirect flows for Open Banking authentication. End users are redirected to their bank's authentication page, either in the browser or via automatic app switch when the bank’s mobile app is installed on the device from which the TPP's service is used.

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is most commonly handled through banks' mobile banking apps using biometrics or PIN for approval. Some banks also support QR-code-based authentication for users accessing Open Banking from a desktop browser.

Corporate users often require e-Identification solutions (e.g., eHerkenning) or dedicated tokens for access to business accounts.

# Payment Specifics

All Dutch banks support SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT) in EUR (Euro) via their open banking APIs. Also support for Instant SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT Inst) is widespread, as most Dutch banks have adopted SCT Inst and typically process eligible payments instantly.

# ABN AMRO

ABN AMRO uses its ABN AMRO app for SCA. Automatic app switch is supported on mobile devices when the app is installed. When accessing via desktop, users can authenticate using the ABN AMRO app by scanning a QR code or, alternatively, using the e.dentifier card reader (mainly for legacy accounts).

# Handelsbanken

Handelsbanken operates in the Netherlands and provides Open Banking services.

# Sandbox Availability

Handelsbanken provides a sandbox environment suitable for end-to-end testing including authorisation flows, account information retrieval, and initiation of payments.

It is available through the Enable Banking API's sandbox environment. Please refer to the Sandbox Credentials section for the credentials to be used for authentication in the Handelsbanken sandbox.

# ING

ING uses the ING Bankieren app for authentication. Automatic app switch is supported on mobile devices when the app is installed. Desktop users are required to log in using their username and password, followed by SCA with the mobile app, or scan the QR code using the mobile app.

Business accounts use the Mijn ING Zakelijk environment, with identical authentication flows.

# Rabobank

Rabobank uses the Rabo Bankieren app for SCA. Automatic app switch is supported on mobile devices when the app is installed. Desktop users authenticate by scanning a QR code in the browser using the mobile app. For some corporate accounts, additional signing authority may be required.

# Sandbox Availability

Rabobank provides a sandbox environment suitable for end-to-end testing including authorisation flows, account information retrieval, and initiation of payments.

# De Volksbank

De Volksbank operates under several brands: ASN Bank, RegioBank, and SNS Bank (currently merging with the ASN Bank). All brands use redirect-based flows with SCA performed via the respective mobile banking apps. Automatic app switch is supported when the app is installed on a mobile device; otherwise, users can scan a QR code displayed in the browser.

# Triodos Bank

Triodos Bank supports a redirect flow with SCA handled via the Triodos Bankieren app. Automatic app switch is supported on mobile devices. Desktop authentication requires scanning a QR code via the app. It is also possible to authenticate using the identifier devices.

# Van Lanschot Kempen

Van Lanschot Kempen provides Open Banking access via a redirect flow with SCA handled through the Van Lanschot Kempen Banking mobile app. Automatic app switch is not supported on mobile devices, however users are given an option to open the app by clicking the corresponding button. Desktop authentication uses a QR code flow.
